Screening and Diagnostic
Mammography
The St. John's Mercy Breast Center offers state-of-the-art
digital mammography to detect and diagnose breast cancer and other breast disease in women. All of
our technologists are specially trained and certified in mammography. Digital
mammography provides electronic images of the breasts that can be enhanced
by computer technology, stored on computers, and even transmitted electronically.
Breast Ultrasound
Breast ultrasounds may be used as a supplement to your mammogram or as a
separate test. Ultrasonic sound waves are used to produce an image of the
breast tissue. Breast ultrasounds assist in detecting and classifying conditions
of the breast.
3-D Breast Ultrasound
Three-dimensional (or 3-D) breast ultrasound is a breakthrough technology that captures hundreds of images of the breast from a variety of angles. These images are rendered in 3-D, a format that provides physicians with more comprehensive views of breast anatomy and more precise views of tumors. This technology is especially beneficial for women with dense breast tissue, which can limit visualization of breast abnormalities. The St. John’s Mercy Breast Center is one of only 25 centers in the nation offering specialized breast mapping using the U-Systems 3-D breast ultrasound system. This innovative system is used in combination with traditional mammography for women with dense breast tissue or who have abnormal mammograms.
Stereotactic and
Ultrasound Guided Core Biopsies
During a stereotactic biopsy, mammographic
guidance allows us to remove a small cylinder of tissue (also called a core)
to diagnose breast abnormalities. No incision is necessary.
