Child Care Center
The Children's Center is open
for the children of all St. John's Mercy employees from 6
a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
on weekends and holidays if needed. The Center bases its program
on developmentally appropriate activities for children ages
6 weeks to 12 years.
A school-age summer camp program is offered for
children who have completed kindergarten and includes older children to age
12. The multifaceted summer program, which runs from the middle of June to late
August, incorporates art, physical activities, and cultural experiences.
Note: A long waiting list to get your child enrolled
in the Children's Center is common. New residents with children who may use
the facility are encouraged to apply early.
Maternity
Leave
The American Board of Family Practice states that
paid absences from the program for vacation or illness must not exceed a combined
total of one month (30 calendar days or 21 working days) per academic year.
This does not include time for CME which should not exceed five days annually.
Residents may design home study or reading electives for a maximum period of
2 weeks that would allow for flexibility to meet their maternity or early child
care needs. This would need to be approved by the Residency Director and their
advisor. They would need to continue during this elective period of time to
see patients in the office. Office time and elective time should be equal to
40 hours of work per week. Vacation and sick leave days must be used for any
paid portion of the maternity leave.
Paternity leave can be arranged on a similar basis.
Vacation
Three weeks' vacation (15 working days) are allowed
each year for vacation time. Working days are defined as Monday through Friday
of the regular work schedule.
Sick leave is 15 days per year
and does not carry over from one year to the next.
Insurance
St. John's Mercy Medical Center provides comprehensive
medical and dental coverage for all house officers and their eligible family
members. Professional liability insurance for residents with respect to their
clinical activities while they are with St. John's Mercy is also provided. Life
insurance premiums are paid by the Medical Center, and benefits are paid to
the specified beneficiary in accordance with the salary schedule. Long-term
disability insurance is also provided by the Medical Center.
CME (Continuing medical education
meetings and workshops)
First and second year residents may attend local
meetings as approved by the Residency Director. Third year residents may attend
national or out-of-state meetings (only in the continental U.S.) as approved
by the Residency Director. For all residents, conference/meeting time should
not exceed five days annually. A maximum of $1,500 is allotted per resident
for CME activities during their three years combined. CME funds may be used
to purchase books, CDs, PDAs or other materials related to a resident's medical
education if approved by the program director.
Meals
Meals are provided free to residents
at St. John's and Cardinal Glennon Hospitals. Lunch is ordered
daily for residents working in the Family Practice Center.
Miscellaneous
Free parking is available adjacent
to St. John's. A $60 allowance for lab coats and $1,000 for
moving expenses are also included. A copy of the resident
